Month of March-Kriyas for the Aquarian Age

Sat Nam,

Yogi Bhajan recommended that we practice the following three Kriyas for the Aquarian Age:
Sat Kriya..... which helps to keep the chakras open
Sodarshan Chakra Kriya.....can totally give you the spiritual experience
Kirtan Kriya.....(Sa-Ta-Na-Ma) takes care of the five elements (tattwas) of the body.
This month we experience these three kriyas, along with yoga sets to prepare for that meditative experience.

Kundalini Yoga: Detoxification

We detoxify continuously throughout life. We process food, thoughts, and all forms of energy. When that flow is continuous and clear, we are steady and flexible. The trouble is that we accumulate more then we process. We become weighted down by a taxed metabolism and the remnants of old emotions.
Kundalini Yoga gives us the means to move the energy of the body and mind to keep us light and vitalized!
At this time of year, many of us are going with some type of Cleanse as a way of detoxifying and renewing our 'lightness'. To enhance that process, this month I'll focus on yoga sets for Detoxification and Strengthening those internal organs, Digestion and Elimination.

Yoga for Your Hands

Play with your hands, consciously, make mudra, and that can be your yoga. Here are some simple things, exercises if you must, that you can try for the wrists, hands, and fingers. A little now and then may make them feel better, inwardly and outwardly. For added benefit, do the movements slower than I demonstrate them here. There are countless possible combinations of movements, which is what has made all this possible for us, so don't limit yourself to working a cursor. Move creatively. As my friend Anthony says, the hands are connected to the heart. Keep that in mind for good yoga.

Using the Root Lock

Sat Nam,

This week we continue with sets to stimulate the Ajna Chakra (pituitary gland) as well as sets to strengthen the nerves and balance the aura.
Afterwards we'll put the Mul Bandh to work in meditations.

The Pituitary Gland and Kirtan Kriya

The Pituitary Gland has been called the "master gland" and in the East is associated with the "third eye".
This week,in addition to yoga sets and meditations that stimulate the pituitary, we will be doing the Kirtan Kriya! 
This kriya is one of three that Yogi Bhajan mentioned would carry us through the Aquarian Age, even if all other teachings were lost.
There are four principle components to practicing Kirtan Kriya correctly: Mantra, Mudra,Voice, and Visualization.

Penetrating the Knot of Shiva

The last of the three knots (granthi's) that need to be penetrated for the path of kundalini to flow freely is the Knot of Rudra or Shiva. This knot is associated with the Brow point (Ajna Chakra), and application of the jalandhar bandh (neck lock) is important in penetrating it. Join Dev Atma this week for Kriyas and Meditations, engaging the neck lock, and stimulating the 3rd Eye Point.

The Knot of Vishnu-This Week

Three knots, or gates, must be penetrated for the path of kundalini to flow freely. They are: the Knot of Brahman, Knot of Vishnu, and Knot of Shiva.

Vishnu means "sustainer" and when this knot at the Heart Center unties, it adjusts the relationship to that which sustains. Uddiyana bandh is important in unlocking this knot, as are Kriyas to balance the Heart Center. Join Dev Atma this week at Prana Yoga and Healing to work on unlocking the Knot of Vishnu!

The Three Gates

For the path of kundalini to flow freely, three key knots (or gates) must be penetrated. They can be associated with the chakras.
The first one is the Knot of Brahman which is in the first chakra. The second is the Knot of Vishnu at the Heart Chakra. The third is the Knot of Shiva (or Rudra) at the brow point.
The body locks - mulbandh, uddiyana, jalandhar bandh, and mahabandh (Great Lock)- are important in unlocking these three gateways.
As your awareness penetrates the first lower gate, you form a new relationship to the senses  and improving the ability to sit still and meditate. Join Dev Atma this week for Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan)with Kriyas and Meditations that work the lower centers and stimulate the Navel Chakra, opening up the fires of that gate to eventually break through this first barrier. 
Everyone is also invited to the Aquarian Sadhana tomorrow morning, the 13th, 5:00 - 7:30 am for free yoga, meditation and chanting.

Mahabandh (Great Lock) is the application of all three locks (mulbandh, uddiyana, and jalandhar) simultaneously with the correct posture and concentration.
This week we practice Mahabandh through posture and meditation to put the body in a perfect healing state to rejuvenate the glands, nerves, and chakras.

Jalandhar Bhandh and Classes This Week

Prana is the generative quality of energy that flows into the body and aura. Apana is the eliminative quality of energy that flows out of the body for cleansing. They are positive and negative sides of the life force. If both exist in sufficient amounts, and are blended together, a neutrality and calmness is created that allows the life force to flow in a different manner. The ancients described this as the opening of the flow of energy into the sushmuna, the central channel up the spine to the brain. As the flow and circulation get established, the Kundalini energy awakens! This blend of Prana and Apana is achieved through the use of body locks, the bhandas.

Jalagndahara bandh  (the neck lock) is the most basic and most generally applied of the locks. It directs the flow of pranic energy into the central channel past the neck and in the central channel relative to the heart and seals the energy that is generated in the upper areas of the brain it in asana and meditation.

This Week, Uddiyana Bandh & the Heart Center

There are certain combinations of muscle contractions for the retention and channeling of Prana that are called bhandas or locks. Each lock has the function of changing blood circulation, nerve pressure, and the flow of cerebral spinal fluid.There are three important locks: mul bandh, uddiyana bhand, and jalandhara bhand.

This week we add the Uddiyana Bandh, or diaphragm lock to our practice. This lock massages the intestines and the heart muscle. It raises the energy, brought to the navel chakra with mulbandh, through the heart to the neck. It also stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the brain. 

Join us for classes this week at Prana Yoga and Healing in Sarasota we practice this lock and do Kundalini Yoga kriyas & meditations relating to the heart chakra.


Wednesday---We celebrate Yogi Bhajan’s Birthday Wednesday with a special meditation practiced globally, 3:30 – 6:15 AM. Arrive when you can and join in; exit quietly if you need to leave early.

Yoga; its not about the stretch


Modern science is just catching up to the ancient wisdom of the mind-body connection.  There is a growing understanding of how mental patterns, like stress, can impact the body.  Yoga and proper alignment is an effective method than exercise to change physical patterns and impact the emotions which may be holding there.  Medical science broadly recognizes that our mental state can impact our health for better and worse.   Most of our emotions start in the nervous system then are exported to your muscles.  

"The aim of yoga is to calm the chaos of conflicting impulses."   Good health results from perfect communication between each part of the body and mind, and when each cell communes with every other.  Although yoga is essentially a spiritual science, it leads to a sense of physical and emotional well- being.

All of  the teachers at Prana Yoga are experienced with guiding you into your own mind body connection.  Whether its Hatha or Kundalini tradition, after a session of yoga, the mind becomes tranquil and passive.  Change the mind, then it's easier to change the nervous system, the circulatory system and so a complete state of balance...Health!

Mul bandh, or root lock, is frequently applied in the kriyas and meditations. It coordinates and combines the energy of the rectum, sex organs, and navel point. The root lock pulls the normally downward flowing apana up, and the normally upward flowing prana down, meeting at the navel point. The combination of these energies at this point generates the psychic heat that can release the Kundalini energy.
